Pensioner dragged to the floor as she’s mugged for her handbag

This is the shocking moment a mugger knocks a pensioner in her 80s to the ground as he snatches her bag.

CCTV footage shows a car pull up as the elderly woman crosses the road in Sittingbourne, Kent, just before 9am on Tuesday.

The driver is seen getting out and quickly walking past the pensioner, who walks with a stick, before looking through a nearby shop window.

He then appears to talk with the woman before suddenly grabbing her bag, throwing her to floor and fleeing in a silver hatchback.

Kent Police confirmed a man in 30s has been arrested in connection with the robbery in St Johns Avenue, just off Rectory Road.

A spokesperson said: ‘The man, who is in his 30s and from the Sittingbourne area, was arrested at around 3pm. He is currently in custody.’

Disgusted neighbours slammed the suspect after seeing the footage. Darran Wright told Kent Online: ‘I was gobsmacked when I saw the footage, the woman is elderly and I just wish I was home at the time.’

Tanya Brennan added: ‘I know that sort of thing goes on but to see it on your doorstep, it makes me physically sick.’

Since the video was shared, a fundraiser set up by the family of the woman, identified as Maureen Pledger, has raised nearly £1,800 for the NHS.

Her grandson wrote on the appeal: ‘As a lot of you saw on Facebook either today, my Nan was robbed of her handbag and lots of people have been worried about her wellbeing.

‘She is fine, a little shaken but no scum will beat her. Lots of you asked to reimburse any money lost but my Nan, Maureen, wouldn’t never accept this.

‘Instead of you would like to make a donation she would like it to go to the NHS for all the work and support they are going through with Covid-19.’
